Optoelectronic
The study and application of electronic devices responsible for sourcing, detecting, and controlling light refers to optoelectronics—also considered as a sub-field of photonics. Light, in this context, often includes invisible forms of radiation such as ultraviolet, infrared, gamma rays, and X-rays and this is in addition to a visible light.
Optoelectronic devices
Optoelectronic devices are electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducers or instruments that use such devices in their function. The basis of optoelectronics is the quantum mechanical effects of light on semiconducting materials and this is sometimes in the presence of electrical fields. Often erroneously used as a synonym, electro optics is branch of physics dealing with all interactions between light and electric fields.
