Light Emitting Diodes LEDs
Light-emitting-diode (LED) is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current is applied in the forward direction of the device. Moreover, this effect is a form of electro-luminescence wherein from the p-n junction, incoherent and narrow-spectrum light is emitted. Usually in a small area light source, LEDs are widely employed as indicator lights on electronic devices and increasingly in higher power applications. The colour of the light being emitted is dependent on the composition and condition of the semi conducting material used: infrared, ultraviolet, or visible. Interestingly, UV-LEDs are used for sterilisation of water and disinfection of devices.
