Calibration
The process of establishing the relationship between a measuring device and the units of measure refers to calibration. With this process, a device or the output of an instrument to a standard with known measurement characteristics is compared. Calibration is generally used with a new instrument, in instances where a specified time has elapsed, when a specified usage (operating hours) has elapsed, when an instrument had a shock or vibration, which potentially may have put it out of calibration, or whenever observations appear questionable. Non-specialised use of calibration includes the process of adjusting the output or indication on a measurement instrument to agree with the value of the applied standard, within a specified accuracy.
